It’s Ferdinand again – and I have a question for you. What comes to your mind when you think about school? You probably think of your friends, homework and some strict teachers. But do you know what school was like in Germany 50 years ago? Or 100 years ago? 150 years ago? Many things were very different. In Friedrichshafen there’s a big school museum, exactly so you can see what school was like in the past and how it has changed up to today.
The exciting part? You can try out all of the things in the school museum yourself. For example, you can go and sit in three different classrooms from the years 1850, 1900 and 1930, that look exactly like they would have at that time, and you can see how things have changed since then. What looks different to your school today? The school benches, for example, looked completely different and there weren’t even exercise books – only slates and chalk. Try and see if you can write with it! Boys and girls also weren’t taught together and the teachers were much stricter than today.
In addition, there are always temporary exhibitions in the museum on different topics. Over the three floors of the school museum, there is a lot to discover about childhood and school, because learning was always important to us here in Friedrichshafen. That’s why here we have the Cooperative State University and the Zeppelin University for students! Who knows, maybe one day you’ll come here to study?
